Small Claims Limits
The monetary jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court is prescribed by regulation under the Courts of Justice Act. As of April 1, 2001, the jurisdiction of the court increased from $6,000 to its current level of $10,000. The Ontario government has announced that the monetary limit of the Small Claims Court will be increased from $10,000 to $25,000 in January 2010.

The Provincial Offences Act is a provincial statute that sets out procedures for the prosecution of offences under other provincial statutes and regulations and municipal by-laws.
We defend provincial offences cases in Ontario, ranging from complex occupational health and safety violations to environmental protection infractions, pursuant to the Provincial Offences Act.

What are provincial offences?
Provincial offences are non-criminal charges, primarily laid by the police, including those committed under the following:
- Liquor Licence Act - such as being intoxicated in a public place or selling alcohol to a minor
- Trespass to Property Act - such as entering premises when entry is prohibited or failing to leave premises after being directed to do so
- City by-laws - such as infractions under Toronto's noise control, property standards and animal control by-laws
The City of Toronto's Court Services manages trials and payments relating to the Provincial Offences Act.
